Writers' Group

Out of the Asylum (OOTA) began in 1996 and now is one of Western Australia’s most vibrant and fastest-growing writers’ groups. An independent writers' group, OOTA is based in Fremantle and aims to support its members to get their work published. OOTA members represent a wide spectrum of writers from the well published to new and emerging.

Achievements

  • OOTA has self published three anthologies of members’ short fiction and poetry: November Light, Tidelines and Friday’s Page.
  • In 2004 OOTA spearheaded WA’s first involvement in activities for National Poetry Week, which has now become the annual Perth Spring Poetry Festival. OOTA continues to participate by running the annual Poetry Wall in conjunction with the State Library of WA.
  • Also in 2004 OOTA mounted the mentoring project Finishing Line, with the assistance of ArtsWA funding.
  • In 2005 OOTA ran the Prose Competition Spilt Ink with judges John Harman and Janet Blagg.
  • From Finishing Line came an anthology of Western Australian poetry The Weighing of the Heart, published by Sunline Press in June 2007.
  • In August 2007 OOTA will launch their membership journal indigo. For more information on indigo journal click here.

Ongoing activities:

  • OOTA provides members with Network Tuesdays—a weekly broadsheet of competitions and opportunities.
  • OOTA News—a monthly newsletter reviewing members' achievements and activities.
  • The Writing Room—a place for members to write in a supportive environment.
  • Reduced fees to Writing From the Centre—a weekly writing class at the Fremantle Arts Centre (Fridays 10-12pm)

Annual membership fee is $50 (full) or $35 (concession)
