guidelines for submissions

We welcome work from leading writers of poetry, short prose, as well as work from unpublished, new and emerging writers.

For volume 3 we are introducing a new section on creative non-fiction. We are particularly looking for personal essays on any topics (e.g. memoir, literary journalism, travel & culture).

You are eligible to submit to indigo journal if you currently reside in Western Australia, or have lived in Western Australia for at least ten years.

Brief feedback may be given by our editorial team to unsuccessful contributors.

Poetry: Maximum of two poems no longer than 40 lines each
(including prose poems). Do not submit photos or graphics.

Short Story: Maximum one short story no longer than 3,500 words.

Creative Non-Fiction: Maximum one essay no longer than 2,600 words.

indigo journal will pay contributors a minimum of $20 per poem and a minimum of $50 for prose.

  • Contributions must be previously unpublished material, not submitted for any current competition.
  • Copyright remains with individual contributors.
  • Format your manuscript in Times New Roman 12pt, double spaced with 2.5cm margins. Use one side of the paper only. Please ensure all titles, headings and textual breaks are clearly marked. Do not put your name on your work as all submissions are judged anonymously.
  • Send two hard copies of your submission through the post, accompanied with a cover sheet, an appropriately sized stamped, self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage to enable the return of your work.
  • Your cover sheet should include your name, address, phone number and email address, plus a biography of no more than 25 words. Clearly state the title(s) of your work, identifying which are poetry and which are short stories. Indicate the number of lines in your poems and the number of words in your short story.

Please note: if guidelines are not followed accurately, your submission will not be accepted.
